Silicosis: Symptoms, Causes and Treatments

Silicosis refers to the lung disease caused by inhaling silica dust. Here are the symptoms, causes, and treatments.

Symptoms:

  • Cough
  • Fever
  • Sharp chest pain
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Wheezes and crackles of the lungs
  • Leg swelling
  • Increased breathing rate
  • Bluish discoloration of the lips

Causes:

  • Exposure to silica, which may come from working with soil, sand, granite or other minerals.

Treatments:

  • There is no specific treatment for silicosis. So, the following methods just help ease it.
  • Remove the source of silica exposure.
  • Medications: cough medicine and bronchodilators.
  • Oxygen (when needed).
  • Antibiotics for respiratory infections.
  • Quit smoking.
