Arachnoid Cyst: Symptoms and Treatments

Arachnoid cysts are fluid-filled sacs in one of the three layers of tissue that surround the brain and spinal cord. It’s the most common type of brain cyst.

Mostly, arachnoid cysts have no symptoms. But when they do, the common symptoms include headaches, nausea, vomiting and others.

  • Headache
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Seizures
  • Hearing and visual disturbances
  • Difficulties with balance and walking

  • Since most arachnoid cysts have no symptoms and remain constant in size, many doctors refrain from treatments.
  • However, if the size and location of the arachnoid cyst require treatments, doctors usually choose to drain the fluid. The procedure is either an open craniotomy fenestration surgery, or a ventriculoperitoneal shunting.
