What Are Alternative Treatments for Metastatic Breast Cancer?

Q: I’ve heard of alternative treatments for metastatic breast cancer. How many kinds of these treatments are there?

A: Most patients diagnosed with breast cancer will have standard or traditional care, which refers to Western medicine, including chemotherapy, radiation, hormone therapy, and surgery.

Metastatic breast cancer is almost uncurable. Sometimes stardard care may not make much difference. Some patients then resort to alternative treatments rather than stardard care. Alternative treatments may relieve the pain and stress patients feel during stardard care. Athough alternative methods have been used widely, many of them haven’t been rigorously tested and sometimes are proven to be useless.

All over the world, there are several medical systems, including traditional Chinese medicine (unblocking internal lines of energy by acupuncture, herb, tai chi, massage and the like), Indian ayurvedic medicine (foods, meditation, and massage), naturopathy and homeopathy (healing the body with natural products like botanicals), indigenous healing methods (practised by people like Native Americans to find the beliefs about the cause of disease and ways to heal of each body system), and exercise like yoga.
