What should you eat with gastroparesis?

In most cases, patients with gastroparesis are recommended a low-fat diet since fat tends to slow down the digestive process.

However, this doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t consume fat at all. So, properly choosing and consuming healthy fats is of great necessity.

Some of the good sources of healthy fats include avocados, butter, coconut, olives, ground flax seeds, salmon and other fishes, etc.

Besides healthy fats, other foods that should be ate when having gastroparesis are:

  • Probiotics: Foods that are rich in probiotics include bone broth and kefir (fermented grass fed organic milk).
  • Vitamin D: Being deficient in Vitamin D may weaken your immune system. Example of food rich in this nutrient is wild Alaskan salmon.
  • Protein: Foods rich in protein that may be helpful in managing gastroparesis are losters, shrimps, cottage cheese, eggs, tofu, lean beef, chicken or turkey, etc.
  • Starches: Starches can provide energies when fighting against gastroparesis. Foods rich in starches include pancakes, rice, pasta, baked french fries, English muffins, plain or egg bagels, flour or corn tortillas, etc.
  • Dairy: Examples are yogurt without fruit pieces, custard and pudding and frozen yogurt.

What foods should you avoid when having gastroparesis?

Certain foods may worsen the symptoms of gastroparesis. These include:

  • Fizzy, caffeinated and alcoholic drinks: These drinks may exacerbate the symptoms and complications of gastroparesis. So if you want to stay hydrated, drink water instead.
  • High-fiber foods: Foods with high-fiber include oranges, root vegetables and beans, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, etc.
  • Processed foods: They contain excessive amounts of sugar and salt or refined carbohydrate which are bad for your health.
  • Foods containing trans fat: Examples are fried foods, store-bought baked goods, microwave popcorns and margarine.

Besides the foods listed above that you should eat and you shouldn’t eat, there are other tips for you to control gastroparesis:

  • Eat small but frequent meals.
  • Take advantage of gravity: Go for a light walk after eating.
  • Replace whole nuts and seeds with nut and seed butters.
  • Choose nutrient-dense foods like 100% juice and peeled fruits and vegetables.
  • Chew foods well.
  • Eat soft foods.
