Acute gastritis is a kind of gastritis that occurs suddenly. It is the sudden inflammation of the lining of the stomach.

Acute gastritis is characterized by discrete foci of necrosis caused by sudden damage of the mucosal defenses. The causes of acute gastritis include using NSAIDs such as aspirin for a long time, having too much physiologic stress, drinking too much alcohol and eating spicy foods.

It should be noticed that if not treated immediately, acute gastritis may lead to stomach ulcers and stomach bleeding.
