Are There Many Types of Meningitis?

Are there many types of meningitis?

Yes. Actually, there are five types of meningitis. They are bacterial meningitis, viral meningitis, fungal meningitis, parasitic meningitis and non-infectious meningitis.

  1. Bacterial meningitis. If not treated, it can be fatal. Bacteria that can cause infection include Neisseria meningitidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae. They can be transmitted among people through kissing, sneezing and coughing.
  2. Viral meningitis. It’s less severe than bacterial meningitis. Some forms of viral meningitis can resolve on their own. It’s mainly caused by enteroviruses.
  3. Fungal meningitis. It’s rare. It happens when a fungus gets into a vein. People with a weaker immune system are particularly vulnerable.
  4. Parasitic meningitis. Primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) is a rare but fatal type of parasitic meningitis. Naegleria fowleri, a parasite often found in warm waters, is the main cause of this PAM.
  5. Non-infectious meningitis. This type of meningitis happens following lupus, cancer, brain surgery or some medicine use.
