Can anxiety cause pheochromocytoma?

A pheochromocytoma is a serious but rather rare tumor of the inner part of the adrenal glands. Patients with the tumor has many signs and symptoms such as headache, heavy sweating and high blood pressure. And anxiety is also one of them.

Although by far researchers have not discovered the exact causes behind a pheochromocytoma, pure anxiety probably won’t be the reason of the tumor. Anxiety alone doesn’t cause long-term high blood pressure (hypertension). But episodes of anxiety can cause dramatic, temporary spikes in your blood pressure.

An anxiety disorder is a mood disorder. It is diagnosed when other medical causes of anxiety are ruled out. People with anxiety disorder should seek help from a mental health professional or primary care provider. And patients pheochromocytoma need medical evaluation and likely specialized surgery.
