Can Infants Have Acid Reflux?

Q:
Can infants have acid reflux?

A:
Yes, infants can have acid reflux. In fact, acid reflux occurs in healthy infants many times per day. As long as your baby is healthy, you have nothing to worry about.

Infant reflux occurs when food backs up from a baby’s stomach, causing the baby to spit up. This condition is rarely serious. As the baby grows older, the condition becomes less common. But if the baby is 18 months or older and still has reflux, it could be a problem. It may be a blockage in the digestive system, an allergy or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
