The U.S. FDA approved Statins are listed:

  • atorvastatin (Lipitor)
  • fluvastatin (Lescol, Lescol XL)
  • lovastatin (Mevacor, Altoprev)
  • pravastatin (Pravachol)
  • rosuvastatin (Crestor)
  • simvastatin (Zocor)
  • pitavastatin (Livalo)

Like any other medicines, Statins has side effects. The most serious side effects are liver failure (roughly 2%) and rhabdomyolysis, which is injury or death of muscle tissue. Rhabdomyolysis from Statins use is very rare, but severe. Usually patients feel mild muscle pain from Statins, if the pain gets serious, patients should go visit doctors asap. 

Other side effects from Statins include:

  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • constipation
  • diarrhea
  • rash
