Disenfranchised Grief

Disenfranchised grief is a term used to describe grief and mourning that people don’t recognize as legitimate. There are three major categories of disenfranchised grief.

  • A death that others think shouldn’t be mourned, such as miscarriage, the loss of a pet, the death of a partner in a secret affair
  • Death of those who suffer
  • Stigmatized death
