Absence epilepsy or absence seizure is one type of the generalized seizure. It often occurs in children and is characterized by staring into space or subtle body movements such as eye blinking or lip smacking.

The possible symptoms of absence epilepsy include impairment of consciousness, blank stare, upward rotation of the eyes, slowed speech, unsteady walking. And impairment of consciousness is the essential symptom of absence epilepsy.

Besides, absence epilepsy is divided into two types: typical absence epilepsy and atypical absence epilepsy. Both can be diagnosed by Electroencephalogram (EEG) or Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
