What is monocytosis?

Monocytosis is an increase in the number of monocytes in the blood. Monocytes are white blood cells that produce macrophages and dendritic cells in the immune system.

In humans, about 950/μL is considered the normal upper limit; mononuclear cell counts above this level are considered mononucleosis.

Monocytosis is frequently observed in dogs with a stress leucogram, however numerous other causes can incite this hematological change, including:

  • Hemolytic anemia
  • Stress
  • Chronic hepatitis
