Breast cancer can be hereditary, which means the abnormal genes are passed from parent to child. The proportion is about 5%-10%. In most cases, two genes are usually involved, BRCA1 (BReast CAncer gene one) and BRCA2 (BReast CAncer gene two).

These two genes exist in everyone. BRCA works to keep breast, ovarian, and other cells growing normally and healthily. However, once mutations occur, the risk of developing breast, ovarian, and other cancer increases, which accounts for up to 10% of all breast cancers. People with breast, ovarian, and other cancer are likely to have a family history. However, if mutations occur, it doesn’t mean that you will 100% develop breast cancer.
