Fecal Occult Blood Test and Fecal Immunochemical Test

A fecal occult blood test (FOBT) is a test used to check stool samples for hidden (occult) blood.

The normal result for FOBT is negative, which indicates that you have no colon cancer.

The positive result of FOBT may indicate:

  • Ulcers
  • Diverticulosis
  • Polyps
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Benign or cancerous tumors

The fecal immunochemical test (FIT) is another newer screening test for colon cancer.

The normal result for FIT is negative, which means there is no blood found in your stool and you have no colon cancer.

The positive result of FIT may indicate higher risk of getting colon cancer.

It should be noticed that a positive result from either FOBT or FIT needs follow-up tests including imaging of the colon and rectum (sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy).
