HLA-B27 Test

HLA-B27 is a blood test to determine whether one has human leukocyte antigen B27 (HLA-B27) on the surface of your cells, thus helping assess the likelihood of having an autoimmune disorder.

The test is required if you have symptoms of arthritis-like chronic joint pain, stiffness, and inflammation in certain areas of your body or have painful inflammation of the eyes. Additionally, you shall be especially careful if you are male and the symptoms began in your early 30s.

To do the test, a blood sample is to be drawn from a vein in your arm.

Normal people without the diseases would get a negative result.

The relationship between HLA-B27 and many diseases has not yet been fully elucidated.  As a matter of fact, there are potential environmental triggers. However, it is still viewed as an important reference in determining diseases.
