Home Massage for Acute Sprain of the Wrist Joint

The wrist joints include radiocarpal articulation and intercarpal joint, the wrist joint may be flexed, extended, adducted, abducted and circled. Sprain is easy to happen to it because of its broad and frequent movement.

Clinical manifestations: The symptoms of the acute sprain are: swelling and pain in the wrist, limited functional activity of the joint, pain becoming severe when the wrist joint is moving, and evident local tenderness.

Therapeutic Method: relating muscles and tendons, promoting blood circulation, removing blood stasis and relieving pain.

Manipulation: you need ask your family member or friend to help you. (they would be the “operator” below).
Gentle and slow manipulations should be used to treat acute injury with more evident pain and swelling. But what should be done first is to select proper points around the injury part. For example, points such as Shaohai (HT 3), Tongli (HT 5) and Shenmen (HT 7) may be selected on the ulnar palmar surface; points such as Chize (LU 57), Lieque (LU 7) and Taiyuan may be selected on the radial palmar surface; points such as Hegu (LI 4), Yangxi (LI 5) and Quchi (LI 11) may be selected on the radial dorsal surface. Massaging these points for about 1 minute so as to promote the flowing of Qi and blood through the channels and collaterals. Then, the operator should massage around the injury part with thumb gently for about 3-5 minutes so as to promote blood circulation, remove blood stasis. Next, the operator should rotate the wrist gently, so as to re-store its normal function of activity.

Treatment is given once daily; 1 course of treatment consists of 3 times.
