Home Massage for Stiffneck

Stiffneck: with the onset usually in the morning, stiffneck is featured with acute muscular spasm, aching, distension, pain and motor impairment of the neck.

Clinical Manifestations: The main manifestations are spasm, stiffness and pain of muscles near the neck. Patient’s head would distort to the affected side and the jaw would turn to the normal side. The neck’s movement is limited. In some severe case, the pain would affect to the head, the upper back and the upper arm.

Therapeutic Method: relaxing muscles and tendons, promoting blood circulation, removing obstruction from channels and collaterals, and stopping pain.

Operation: you need ask your family member or friend to help you. (they would be the “operator” below).
You need sit down, and the operator should stand behind your affected side. The operator should massage on the neck and shoulder of the affected side. Meanwhile, supporting your lower jaw and push-shake it gently with other hand, this process needs about 4-5 minutes. When muscles of neck are relaxed, the operator could repeat the above operation in a larger range (about 5 degrees than before), this process needs more than 5 minutes. Then the operator should massage points: FengChi (GB 20), Fengfu (GV 16), Jianjin (GB 21) for 5 minutes in a gentle way.
