How Does the Hyperammonemia Affect one?

Infants may present with refusal to eat, lethargy progressing to coma and death.

Adults may present with protein avoidance, vomiting, migraine, mood swings, chronic fatigue, irritability, seizures disorientation and coma.

One of the reasons for these CNS manifestations is due to swelling of brain (cerebral edema) and raised intracranial pressure. We will see how high ammonia levels cause cerebral edema below.
