Endometritis is an inflammation of the lining of the uterus. It is usually due to an infection.

Causes
As has been said above, infection is a general cause of endometritis. The possible infections include:

  • sexually transmitted infections (STIs), such as chlamydia and gonorrhea
  • tuberculosis
  • infections resulting from the mixture of normal vaginal bacteria

Symptoms

  • abdominal swelling
  • abnormal vaginal bleeding
  • abnormal vaginal discharge
  • constipation
  • discomfort when having a bowel movement
  • fever
  • sickness
  • pain in the pelvis, lower abdominal area, or rectal area

Treatments

  • Antibiotics to treat the infection and prevent complications.
  • Fluids through a vein (by IV)
  • Rest

Sexual partners may need to be treated if the condition is caused by a sexually transmitted infection.

Although endometritis is usually not life-threatening, but it’s important to get it treated as soon as possible.
