How to Cure Hand Foot and Mouth Disease?

Q: My son is 6 years old. He was diagnosed with hand foot and mouth disease yesterday, but the doctor didn’t prescribe any medicines for him. Painful blisters made him cry this morning. What’s the best cure for the disease?

A: There is no vaccine, cure or treatment for hand, foot and mouth disease. It is a self-limiting illness. As long as there is no complication, the patient often gets recovered in 7 to 10 days since his initial symptoms appear.

Though there is no cure for the illness, the patient can take medicines to relieve the symptoms. If the person feels too much pain from the blisters and sores, he can take over-the-counter (OTC) pain relievers like ibuprofen (Advil) or acetaminophen (Tylenol). If ulcers occupy both inside and outside his mouth, he can use numbing mouth sprays to ease the pain. As for the sore throat, cold treats like Popsicles, yogurt, and smoothie are useful.

When the rashes on his skin become so itchy that he keeps scratching them, you can use anti-itch lotion on him, like calamine.
