How to Diagnose Aggressive Bladder Cancer?

Q: I have bladder cancer but I don’t know in which grade is it. What test can I do to know the grade?

A: In a research published in the British Journal of Cancer, a simple urine test is introduced. Simple as it is, it can distinguish between low-grade and aggressive bladder cancers. Once the grade of the cancer is confirmed, doctors can begin to tailor and speed up their treatment for it.

In the study, researchers measured levels of a protein, EpCAM, shed by bladder tumors in 600 people with bladder cancer. Finally they found that higher amount of the protein in the urine links with more aggressive cancers. Thus doctors can decide the grade of bladder cancer partly relying on the percentage of the protein in the patient’s urine.
