Diagnosis
To diagnose encephalitis, you may have:

  • Brain imaging: MRI or CT images
  • Spinal tap (lumbar puncture)
  • Other lab tests: blood, urine or excretions tests
  • Electroencephalogram (EEG)

Treatment
The usual treatment of encephalitis may include:

  • Bed rest
  • Plenty of fluids
  • Anti-inflammatory drugs — such as acetaminophen (Tylenol, others), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) and naproxen sodium (Aleve) — to relieve headaches and fever
  • Antiviral drugs, such as Acyclovir (Zovirax), Ganciclovir (Cytovene), Foscarnet (Foscavir)
