Diagnosis
To diagnose hemochromatosis, you may have some of the following tests:

  • Blood tests: including Serum transferrin saturation.Serum ferritin.
  • Liver function tests.
  • MRI.
  • Testing for gene mutations.
  • Removing a sample of liver tissue for testing (liver biopsy).

Treatment
There are mainly two treatment options for hemochromatosis:

  • Blood removal (phlebotomy).
  • Chelation: A medication binds excess iron, allowing your body to expel iron through your urine or stool.
