How to Prepare for a Thyroid Biopsy?

Q:

I’m going to have a thyroid biopsy for the diagnosis of thyroid cancer. How should I prepare for it?

A:

You need to tell your doctor if you are allergic to any medicines or are taking any drugs regularly. Make sure that the doctor knows the names and doses of all your drugs. If you have any bleeding problem, you also need to let your doctor know it.

Actually, you don’t have to do anything before a needle biopsy. You will be awake during the whole procedure.

If it’s an open biopsy, you will have general anesthesia and be asleep during it. Before the biopsy, you must follow the instructions exactly about when to stop eating and drinking, or the procedure will be cancelled. Any drugs needed to be taken before the biopsy should be taken with only a sip of water.
