How to Prevent Orthostatic Hypotension?

Patients with orthostatic hypotension symptoms can follow this guide to prevent OH occurring.

  • Change positions slowly and gradually, to allow more minutes for the blood to flow back to the heart from legs
  • Avoid standing still for long periods of time
  • Wear compression socks to reduce blood pooling in the legs
  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Eat several small meals each day, instead of fewer, bigger meals, because full stomach makes the blood flow back to the heart even slower

If your symptoms are particularly bad in the morning, consider lifting the head of your bed so that you are not lying flat.
