How To Treat and Prevent C. difficile infection?

Q:
How to treat and prevent C. difficile infection?

A:
Stopping the medication, usually antibiotics, or staying away from the healthcare environment that triggers the infection is the priority during the process of C. difficile infection treatment. Depending on the severity of your infection, your treatment might include one or the combination of any of the following methods:

  • Antibiotics under doctor’s advice.
  • Fecal microbiota transplant (FMT).
  • Probiotics.
  • Surgery.

The risk of transmission of C. difficile infection is high. Therefore, if you are exposed to a healthcare environment, you’d better  wear gloves and noncritical medical devices used for a single person with CDI. Hand washing, avoid unnecessary use of antibiotics, and thorough cleaning are also proved to be effective ways of prevention.
