Chlamydia and gonorrhea are all sexually transmitted diseases. Besides the bacteria that may cause them, the symptoms, treatments are almost the same.

For chlamydia:

  • In mild cases of chlamydia, which are limited to the cervix, the treatments include a single dose of an antibiotic called azithromycin or with 7 days of an antibiotic called doxycycline (which should not be used during pregnancy)
    In severe cases of chlamydia, which are associated with fever, abdominal pain, or abnormal blood test results , at least a week of antibiotics should be included in the treatments.

For gonorrhea:

  • In mild cases of gonorrhea, which are limited to the cervix, the treatments include a single shot of an antibiotic called ceftriaxone along with a second oral antibiotic such as azithromycin or doxycycline.
    In severe cases of gonorrhea, which are associated with fever, abdominal pain, or abnormal blood test results, at least a week of antibiotics should be included in the treatments.
