As we all know, severe PTSD may interfere with people’s normal life. Effective treatments are of great importance.

Treatments for PTSD can be divided into two major categories: psychotherapy and medication.

Psychotherapy:

  • Psychodynamic therapy: Help patients to examine personal values and emotional conflicts caused by trauma.
  • Group therapy: Allow patients with trauma to share thoughts, feelings, fears with each other.
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy: Learn to change thoughts patterns, thus avoid troublesome emotions, feelings.
  • Prolonged exposure therapy: Allow patients to relive their traumatic experiences again in relatively controlled and safe environment, help them to face the fear and gradually become comfortable with trauma-situations.

Medications:

  • Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs): Paxil, Celexa, Luvox, Prozac, and Zoloft
  • Tricyclic antidepressants: Elavil and Doxepin
  • Mood stabilizers: Depakote and Lamictal
  • Atypical antipsychotics: Seroquel and Abilify
  • Some certain blood pressure medicines: Propranolol and Prazosin
