How to treat PTSD?

As we all know, severe PTSD may interfere with people’s normal life. Effective treatments are of great importance.

Treatments for PTSD can be divided into two major categories: psychotherapy and medication.

  • Psychodynamic therapy: Help patients to examine personal values and emotional conflicts caused by trauma.
  • Group therapy: Allow patients with trauma to share thoughts, feelings, fears with each other.
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy: Learn to change thoughts patterns, thus avoid troublesome emotions, feelings.
  • Prolonged exposure therapy: Allow patients to relive their traumatic experiences again in relatively controlled and safe environment, help them to face the fear and gradually become comfortable with trauma-situations.

  • Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs): Paxil, Celexa, Luvox, Prozac, and Zoloft
  • Tricyclic antidepressants: Elavil and Doxepin
  • Mood stabilizers: Depakote and Lamictal
  • Atypical antipsychotics: Seroquel and Abilify
  • Some certain blood pressure medicines: Propranolol and Prazosin
