Information about ABG Test

An arterial blood gas (ABG) test is the test that measures oxygen levels, carbon dioxide levels, and acid-base levels in your blood. If you think you have got serious injuries or illness, you may need this test.

The test can tell how well your lungs, heart, and kidneys are working. Before taking ABG test, the procedure called the modified Allen test may be conducted to check whether the blood flow to your hand is normal or not.

Normal ranges of parameters in ABG test are as follows:

  • p02: 10-14 kPa
  • pCO2: 4,5-6 kPa
  • pH: 7.35-7.45
  • HCO3: 22-26 mmol/L
  • Base Excess (BE): -2-2 mmol/L

If your results aren’t normal, certain diseases or injuries may be indicated.
