Irritable Bowel Syndrome-Basic Facts You Need to Know

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common intestinal disorder. It affects the large intestine.

The causes of IBS is still unknown, though there are some suppose, including:

  • Muscle contractions in the intestine.
  • Nervous system.
  • Inflammation in the intestines.
  • Severe infection.
  • Changes in bacteria in the gut

The disease is not life-threatening. Only a small number of people with IBS have severe signs and symptoms, which includes:

  • Abdominal pain, cramping or bloating
  • Excess gas
  • Diarrhea or constipation (sometimes the two alternates with each other)
  • Mucus in the stool
  • A swelling belly
  • Some people also have urinary symptoms or sexual problems.

Some people can control their symptoms by controlling diet, lifestyle and stress. And more severe symptoms can be treated with medication and counseling.
