Is Botulism Contagious?

Q:
Is botulism contagious?

A:
NO.

Botulism cannot be spread from one person to another. However, it develops if

  • a person ingests the toxin
  • the toxin is inhaled or injected
  • the organism grows in the intestines or wounds and toxin is released

When people eat the same food containing the toxin that leads to botulism, they often mistakenly think of botulism contagious.
