Is Dementia Hereditary?

Q:
Is dementia hereditary?

A:
The majority of dementia is not hereditary, but this depends on the particular cause of dementia.

Some causes of dementia are inherited such as:

  • Huntington’s disease – One faulty copy of the gene is needed in order to inherit the disease
  • Frontotemporal dementias – 30 to 50 per cent of cases are inherited

If someone have inherited the gene, he or she will get the disease if live long enough. Some other dementias have both inherited and non-inherited forms.
