Is Pancreatic Cancer Curable?

Q:

Is pancreatic cancer curable?

A:

Whether pancreatic cancer is curable depends on the type or stage of the cancer. When the tumor is only around the pancrea and can be removed by surgery, patients will go through a Whipple procedure. In this case, the pancreatic cancer is considered to be curable. However, only about 20% of patients undergoing a Whipple procedure for potentially curable pancreatic cancer live five years.

Yet the rest of patients who went through the Whipple procedure can only survive less than two years on average. And when the cancer is no longer limited to the pancrea and transfers to other areas of the body, the cancer is no longer curable, and patients at the stage are expected to survive less than a year.
