Is Pancreatic Cancer Hereditary?

Q:

Is pancreatic cancer hereditary?

A:

While most cases of pancreatic cancer develop for unknown reasons, about 5-10% of pancreatic cancer is hereditary. That means it runs in families and is often referred to as Familial Pancreatic Cancer (FPC).

People whose first degree relatives (mother, father, brother, sister) are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer have an increased risk of getting pancreatic cancer. The greater the number of first degree relatives with pancreatic cancer is,  the greater this risk is. If you are one of the high-risk group, the better decision is to go through a genetic testing or screening test to detect the disease in early stage or dispel your worries.
