Sometimes polycythemia vera may be hereditary. Most people develop polycythemia vera in their adulthood, commonly from an acquired mutation in the gene called jak2.

But there does exist the condition that parents passed on the broken gene to their children, thus causing polycythemia vera in their childhood. However, hereditary polycythemia vera is not always the case.
