Is Sarcoidosis A Cancer?

Q:
Is sarcoidosis a cancer?

A:
Sarcoidosis is not a cancer, because sarcoidosis and cancer are different in the way cells develop.

In sarcoidosis, cells will eventually form granulomas or lumps; however in cancer, cells multiply out of control and lack order.

But there does exist a link between sarcoidosis and cancer despite differences. Patients with sarcoidosis may at a slightly higher risk of developing cancer, particularly liver cancer, lung cancer and skin cancer.

Some drugs used to control sarcoidosis have been shown to increase the risk of cancer, but only when used in high doses.
