Is Type 2 Diabetes Hereditary?

Q:

My grandpa and father all have the type 2 diabetes. I am afraid it may also happen to me. Is type 2 diabetes necessarily hereditary? How can I avoid it?

A:

It’s not necessarily that you will get type 2. Except for the family history, your lifestyle also plays an important role. It is only partially hereditary.

However, if you have a healthy lifestyle including regular exercise, normal weight and healthy diet featuring low fat, low sugar and low salt, your risk of developing diabetes will decrease sharply.

Diabetes is hereditary but that does not mean inevitability.
