Joint Supplement Speeds Melanoma Cell Growth

Chondroitin sulfate is a dietary supplement taken to strengthen joints, it’s commonly used in joint support formula of many brands. As I believe quite a few of HTQ audience are taking them. There are experiments conducted in cell culture and mouse models that proved Chondroitin sulfate speeds up growth of a type of melanoma.

Researchers have found that chondroitin sulfate can boost growth by melanoma cells carrying the V600E mutation, but not other melanoma cells. V600E is a mutation of the BRAF gene in which valine (V) is substituted by glutamic acid (E) at amino acid 600. It is possible that someone with precancerous lesions containing the V600E mutation, who takes chondroitin sulfate, might accelerate the growth of those cells, or that V600E positive cancer patients taking chondroitin sulfate might have a higher risk of relapse.
So what to watch out? If you need medication or supplements for your joints, please take to your doctor to evaluate Your Risk of taking Chondroitin sulfate.
