Symptoms: oral swellings, speckled patches and more

There can be a number of common symptoms and signs of mouth cancer. For example, you may have swellings, thickenings, lumps, rough spots or eroded areas on your lips, gums or other areas inside the mouth.

  • Velvety white, red, or speckled (white and red) patches in the mouth
  • Perhaps unexplained bleeding in the mouth
  • Unexplained numbness, loss of feeling, or pain/tenderness in any area of the face, mouth, or neck
  • Persistent sores on the face, neck, or mouth that bleed easily and do not heal within 2 weeks
  • A soreness or feeling that seems like something is caught in the back of the throat
  • Hoarseness, chronic sore throat, or change in voice

For example, patients may have difficulty chewing, swallowing, speaking or moving the jaw or tongue. You may also experience ear pain and dramatic weight loss, as is common in many cases of cancer. When you notice any of these changes, contact your dentist or health care professional immediately.
