What kind of diet is suitable for people with appendicitis?

Appendicitis is a kind of inflammation of the appendix. The appendix is a 3.5-inch-long tube of tissue that extends from the large intestine. Unhealthy eating is one of the causes of appendicitis.

If you have appendicitis, you should

  • Eat a high fiber diet full of green leafy vegetables and whole grains.
  • Eat more fresh fruits or drink fresh fruit juices.
  • Eat food easy to digest including brown rice with vegetables such as green peppers, broccoli, cauliflower, beans and peas.
  • Eat some chicken soup and steamed vegetable salads.
  • Eat foods rich in Vitamin B, C and E.
  • Drink more water and other healthy fluids to flush out harmful substances from your body.
  • Limit hard solid foods.
  • Avoid dairy products, meats and refined sugar products.

What food may cause appendicitis?

According to the study, appendicitis is not caused by a certain kind of food. It can be caused by some other diseases including gastrointestinal dysfunction, upper respiratory infection (URI) or acute enteritis. Besides, some situations such as unhealthy eating, excessive drinking can lead to appendicitis, too.

Some foods may worsen appendicitis:

  • Seafood
  • Spicy food
  • Greasy food
