Pregnenolone Test

Pregnenolone test measures pregnenolone levels in the blood to help detect and monitor treatment for rare types of congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). It is sometimes used to help rule out other conditions as well.

Normal Range:

Age Ng/dL
1 day-59 days 68-1303
60 days-1 year ≤219
2-6 years ≤140
7-9 years ≤156
10-12 years 15-220
13-17 years 12-196
≥18 years (Adult) 22-237

Meanings of the Results:

  • Pregnenolone levels are elevated when there is 3-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase deficiency.
  • Pregnenolone levels may be elevated when there is 17-alpha-hydroxylase deficiency.

Results of pregnenolone tests need to be interpreted with other precursor and hormone results.
