Special Precautions When Treating RA with Biologics

Biologics are newest drugs to treat RA, they’re specially good for patients who don’t respond to traditional DMARDs, or can’t bear side effects of DMARDs. Biologics also have fewer side effects.

Biologics target proteins and other molecules in the immune system that cause inflammation, pain and destruction. A list of biologics, including Enbrel, Remicade, Inflectra, Renflexis, Ixifi, Humira, Simponi, and Cimzia are tumor necrosis factor (TNF) blockers.

TNF blockers suppress the immune system to control RA inflammation, because it suppresses the immune system, it increase the risk of getting an infection. Patients using TNF blockers should notice any fever or sign of infection, and report to doctor. Vaccinations are recommended prior to or during treatment with biologics.
