Symptoms of Acute Pulmonary Embolism

Symptoms of acute pulmonary embolism (PE) varies among people. Some patients feel discomfort but others may not. These symptoms include:

  • pleuritic chest pain
  • shortness of breath
  • hypoxia

There are a few atypical symptoms of PE. 

  • Seizures
  • Syncope
  • Abdominal pain
  • Fever
  • Productive cough
  • Wheezing
  • Decreasing level of consciousness
  • New onset of atrial fibrillation
  • Hemoptysis
  • Flank pain 
  • Delirium (in elderly patients)
