The Best Supplements for High Cholesterol

Hypertriglyceridemia, which means high triglyceride, and hypercholesterolemia, which means high cholesterol, are causes to heart disease. Managing high triglyceride and cholesterol is an effective way to prevent cardiovascular diseases. 

For most of us, with or without doctor’s prescription, vitamin shop is a must-visit place as supplementary measure in managing cholesterol. Then, which vitamins or herbs work best for lowering cholesterol?

  1. Fish Oil – researches show omega-3 fat acid helps to clear triglyceride from your blood. Fish oil with rich DHA and EPA can lower blood triglyceride by around 30% after regular serving for a period of time. The recommended dosage is 2-4 mg DHA and EPA per day, it’s a high but effective dosage. If you have very high triglyceride, you should consult your doctor to get a prescription fish oil which contains even higher DHA and EPA. Studies have shown that taking fish oil can reduce risk of sudden cardiac death.
  2. Niacin – clinic trials prove Niacin can lower LDL cholesterol, triglyceride, and raise HDL cholesterol(the Good Cholesterol). However, the trial dosage is 4-6 times higher than what you can get from a supplement Niacin from vitamin shop. The maximum dosage from Vitamin shop is usually 500 mg. It will help, but not as effective as the study says. 
  3. Red Yeast Rice – it’s a natural Statin. The red yeast rice is a type of fungus that grows on rice, the secret is that it contains a small amount of lovastatin, a type of Statin.  During the past decade, numerous studies have shown that various red yeast rice preparations/capsules can lower LDL level by 20%-30$.  Red yeast rice’s effect on lowering LDL has been proved, however, when people choose from various brands, you’d better choose one that states the amount of lovastatin generated from daily serving. 
  4. Soy Protein – in 2006, American Heart Association found that consuming 50 grams of soy protein per day can reduce LDL by 3% on average. That means soy protein can lower LDL cholesterol, but only slightly.
  5. Psyllium – psyllium generates rich fiber. Fiber is good to flush waste away from your body with cholesterol. Usually people should get fiber from daily consuming of vegetable, whole grain and fruits. However, for people with higher cholesterol, taking psyllium will help. Psyllium will make people go to bathroom more, and maybe a bit uncomfortable as you can imagine.
  6. Coenzyme Q10 – some says it helps lowering LDL cholesterol’s ability to stick to the blood vessels in a lab test on mice. Some says it needs more studies. So no conclusion yet. However, Coenzyme Q10 is a great antioxidant that protects heart and liver cells.
  7. Garlic – people talk about Garlic’s effect of lowering cholesterol, but it’s not clinically proven. So far the researches show little effect. 
  8. Policosanol – policosanol is a mix of sugar cane and beeswax, some claim that it is a cholesterol-buster, but the research was funded by the manufacturer. No independent research shows the similar result yet.
