What is the meaning of agoraphobia?

Agoraphobia is a kind of specific fear. The patient would perceive themselves in an unsafe situation, these situations could include: shopping, waiting in a line, passing a empty plaza, or just standing outside.


What are symptoms of the agoraphobia?

The patient would be anxious and feels there is no way to escape from the situation. More symptoms could include fear of:

  • Leaving home alone
  • Crowds or waiting in line
  • Enclosed spaces, such as movie theaters, elevators or small stores
  • Open spaces, such as parking lots, bridges or malls
  • Using public transportation, such as a bus, plane or train.

And the patient would show following symptoms when agoraphobia happened:

  • Chest pain or pressure
  • Sweating
  • Feeling a loss of control
  • Sudden flushing or chills
  • Rapid heart rate

What about the diagnosis of agoraphobia?

The diagnosis would according to the patient symptoms and some psychological test, also some certain physical exam would be taken.


What about the treatment of agoraphobia?

The treatment of this should include the medicine, behavior therapy and psychocognitive therapy. For example, the doctor would bring the patient to a crowded place, at the first time, there would be somebody stay with the patient; then at the next treatment, the doctor would ask the companion to keep some distance from the patient, and the distance would be longer at next time, finally the patient would be cured by this way.
