Vaginal Rejuvenation: Cost, Risks, Recovery

Vaginal rejuvenation is also known as female genital plastic surgery. It contains several cosmetic procedures, including:

  • Labiaplasty, which reduces the length of the labia minora
  • Clitoral hood reduction, which excises excess folds of the clitoral hood
  • Labia majoraplasty, which reduces the size of the outer, hair-bearing labia majora
  • Monsplasty, which reduces bulging of the mons
  • Vaginoplasty, which is designed to tighten the vagina

A good candidate for vaginal rejuvanation might have:

  • Vaginal laxity
  • Urinary leakage
  • Prolapse, a condition where organs push into the vaginal canal

Most surgical vaginal rejuvenation procedures cost about $5,000 on average.

The cost depend on the surgeon and procedure you choose and the city you live in.

The risks accompanying vaginal rejuvenation include bleeding, hematoma and infection. The most common complication is over-resection. An aggressive reduction can lead to chronic dryness, scarring at or near the vaginal opening and pain with intercourse.

First and foremost, you should consult with an experienced surgeon.
Your surgeon will perform a physical exam and discuss your medical history.

Particularly, do a bowel prep before the vaginoplasty surgery.

Surgical steps

  • The trim procedure, in which the extra tissue is removed and sewn up directly
  • The wedge procedure, which maintains a natural border after a pie-shaped piece of tissue has been removed.

Closure is usually done with absorbable sutures.

Clitoral hood reduction

A clitoral hood reduction is usually done accompanying a labiaplasty.

The excess tissue is marked according to the patient’s anatomy. In some patients the excision is performed as a “Y” extension off the labiaplasty. Closure is usually done with absorbable sutures.

Labia majoraplasty

The surgeon removes two slight crescents of skin from the inner portion of each labium. When there is atrophy of fatty tissue, a small amount of fat can be transferred from another area of the body. Closure is usually done with absorbable sutures.

Sometimes the amount of skin removed can be extensive. But in some cases, liposuction is sufficient.

A wedge is marked to delineate the extra skin to be removed from inside the vagina. Beneath the skin, the tissues are tightened with strong sutures. When the vaginal canal has been tightened, the mucosal skin is sewn closed.

Most patients take a week off from work, during which patients use a cold pack to reduce swelling and pain. Icing needs twenty minutes each time, then you can take it off for another twenty minutes.

The patient can also lie with her bottom raised up to reduce swelling.

Pyhysical activity is restricted for two to six weeks, depending on the extensiveness of the procedure. After four to six weeks, patients can resume using tampons or having intercourse.

The most distorting swelling often disappears after 6 weeks, but residual swelling takes six months to reduce.
