Warfarin Vs Aspirin – Which One Should I Choose in Medication Treatment for Afib?

Q: Warfarin is very effective in anticoagulation, but it may cause bleeding. The effect of Aspirin is not as good as that of Warfarin, but it has less side effects. Which one should an AFib patient choose for medication treatment?

A: In atrial fibrillation, the priority should be given to anticoagulant medicines. It means that warfarin is superior to aspirin in AFib. Warfarin belongs to anticoagulant medicines, while aspirin is antiplatelet drug. Though the effects of the two drugs seem the same, they are different from the theoretical aspect.

From the terms of the categories they subordinate to, you can tell whose ability of anticoagulation is stronger.

Warfarin may cause bleeding. But compared with stroke which can cause permanent disability and death, bleeding is not so dangerous, at least it can be cured. Moreover, the risk of intracranial hemorrhage – the most perilous consequence caused by warfarin – is very low. In conclusion, patients with AFib should give their fist option to warfarin unless they are too sensitive to the side effects of it.
