What Are Complementary Treatments for Breast Cancer?

Q: I’m thinking about receiving complementary treatments, but I haven’t made up my mind. What is this kind of treatments exactly?

A: Instead of traditional or mainstream treatments, some patients may choose complementary and/or alternative treatments to diagnose, prevent or treat breast cancer or its symptoms.

Different from alternative treatments, complementary ones refer to treatments used with regular and traditional medical care and treatments. Although many complementary and alternative methods claim that they can cure cancer, these claims are almost all unproven.  However, some complementary methods do help treat breast cancer, improve a patient’s well-being, or ease side effects because of cancer treatments.

Whether to choose complementary treatments or not is a personal choice for you to make. It is better to  learn more about the risks, such as side effects, and have enough discussions with professionals.
