Q:
What Are the Alternatives beyond CPAP Therapy for Sleep Apnea?

A:
Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy is the most common and recommended initial treatment for most patients with moderate to severe sleep apnea. However, for many people the claustrophobia, discomfort and numerous side effects of CPAP aren’t worth it.

There are some alternative options for moderate to severe sleep apnea patients who aren’t willing to or able to tolerate the CPAP therapy:

  • loss weight if you’re overweight, though diet or bariatric procedures.
  • take upper airway surgeries, only for certain patient groups.
  • use oral appliances, especially in patients with mild to moderate sleep apnea.
  • use nasal expiratory resistive devices.
  • use oral negative pressure devices.

Severe sleep apnea patients please consult your doctor for more information about the alternative options.
