What is Costochondritis?

When the cartilage that connects your ribs to your breastbone (sternum) become inflamed and cause pain, this condition is called costochondritis. The causes of costochondritis remain unknown, but any of the following activities may contribute to it:

• Injury. (especially an injury to your chest).
• Physical strain. Hard exercises, heavy lifting or severe coughing.
• Some types of arthritis. (e.g. osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis).
• Infection. Viral infection, infections after surgery or from drug use.
• Tumors. Both noncancerous and cancerous tumors can cause costochondritis.


What are the symptoms of Costochondritis?

The costochondritis symptoms are usually as followings:

• Aching, sharp and pressure-like pain on your chest, especially on the left side of your breastbone
• Worsening when you breathe deeply or cough
• Affects more than one rib


What are the treatments of Costochondritis?

Costochondritis usually goes away without treatment, but sometimes it may take several months or even a year for a thorough recover. You may need any of the following to relieve the pain:

• Avoid sports or activities that may worsen the pain
• Apply cold or hot compresses

You can also take some medicines to help you feel better:

Acetaminophen. This medicine is available without a doctor’s prescription. But you should take it under directions as incorrect dose may cause liver damage.
NSAIDs. This medicine can decrease pain, swelling and fever and is available with or without a doctor’s prescription. But you should talk with your provider before using his medicine as it can cause stomach bleeding or kidney problems in certain people. Children under 6 months should not take this medicine without direction from healthcare providers.

You can try any of the following home remedies to relieve from costochondritis:
• Taking pain relievers
• Using local heat or ice to compresses
• Avoiding unnecessary exercise or activities that may worsen the symptoms worse;
• Doing stretching exercises
